In addition to posing the most formidable public health threat in modern times, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to bolster health departments’ emergency preparedness efforts. PHAB is pleased to share two new resources highlighting PHAB’s important work in this area:

  • A new blog published April 16 in the journal Health Affairs, No Longer Invisible: The Critical Role of Local Health Departments in Responding to COVID-19, explores the critical role local health departments play in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and the considerable challenges to their work. Co-authored by PHAB Director of Research and Evaluation Jessica Kronstadt, the blog touches on some of the activities, such as PHAB accreditation, that can help ensure public health systems have the capacity to address emergencies such as COVID-19.
  • Recognizing the stellar work of accredited health departments in the area of emergency preparedness, PHAB has released a new brief highlighting some of the ways preparing for accreditation has helped health departments strengthen the tools needed in a response effort. Health Department Accreditation: Strengthening the Foundation for Public Health Emergency Preparedness shares real-life examples illustrating accredited health departments’ successes in responding to public health emergencies.
