Accredited and reaccredited health departments demonstrate their commitment to accountability and performance improvement.

May 30, 2023 – Alexandria, VA – The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) today announced the names of ten public health departments—one state, seven local, and two military installations—that have achieved accreditation or reaccreditation status after completion of a systematic review process against national standards. After demonstrating their commitment to building and maintaining a strong infrastructure to better serve their communities, these health departments have achieved accreditation for the next five years.

Health departments are the core of public health and greatly improve the health of the communities they serve. Accreditation supports continuous improvement by increasing health department accountability and transparency, stimulating quality and performance improvement, and strengthening their infrastructure.

“Public health accreditation has been a monumental challenge for our small health department, but has also been rewarding to see the dedication and growth of our staff, and development of our programs,” said Dr. John F. James, MD, MPH, SFS, Director of JBLE-EUSTIS Department of Public Health McDonald Army Health Center. “This recognition will allow us to confidently continue to provide high quality services to the installation and community we serve.”

“We are thrilled to receive accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board,” said Dr. Susan Kansagra, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Director of the Division of Public Health. “This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and partners who strive to protect and promote the health of all North Carolinians. Accreditation reinforces our commitment to excellence and ensures that programs and services meet the highest standards.”

PHAB administers the national accreditation program and works to advance and transform public health practice for governmental public health departments in the United States and abroad through quality and performance improvement.

“Public health departments are the backbone of the public health system and are relied upon every day for the health and safety of their communities,” said PHAB President and CEO Paul Kuehnert, DNP, RN, FAAN. “We are proud of these health departments for fostering trust, accountability and transparency through national accreditation.”
