About the Academy

In partnership with George Mason University and funded by the Virginia Department of Education, The Center is helping develop a School Nurse Leadership Academy that will begin in January 2025.

The purpose of the School Nurse Leadership Academy is to help school nurse leaders develop the skills needed to lead district level school health services. The cohort-based program will develop future leaders who have the vision and skills necessary to support school nurses as they address the often-complex health needs of school-age children.

The Academy is for school nurse leaders from all states and locations (i.e. school nurse administrators, lead nurses, leaders of state/local school nurse organizations).

Based on a national needs assessment conducted in November 2023, the program will focus on three main areas:

  • The world of preK-12 education and the role of school health
  • Fostering leadership skills and gaining confidence to strategically create change (i.e. Strategic thinking, leading self and others)
  • Managerial skills of a leader (i.e. budgeting for change, conflict management)

The Academy will be a 1 ½ to 2 year program with monthly contacts. Format of the program include asynchronous modules, live zoom webinars, and in-person experiential learnings. (If sufficient interest, the in-person portion can be brought to a state or region). Networking and coaching from experienced leaders will also be included in the program.
